Acts 2:1-21

Pentecost - The Spirit poured out

The dramatic descension of the Holy Spirit on the disciples was the beginning of a new age - a new covenant if you will. Joel spoke of the signs of the last days, the darkening of the sun and the pouring out of God's Spirit, both of which were now fulfilled.

The Last Days

The last days bring two things: a warning, and a hope. The warning is that God's judgement is coming soon. Like yesterday's passage, the Bible is clear that judgement will come on those who reject God. The hope is that Jesus rules from His throne. Those who beleive in Him now live under His sovereignty and power.

The Spirit for All

In the Old Testament, only certain special people were blessed with the Holy Spirit. Prophets like Daniel, Elijah, etc. But now God's Spirit is poured out on all His people. The festival on Pentecost was a celebration of the harvest and this was a gospel harvest. So many people heard the gospel that day and joined the disciples in receiving the Holy Spirit.

An old message, made new

The old message was that "Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved". This is still true, but it has a twist - that name is Jesus, and the invitation is Global.
